[SEE POST BELOW]
One of the areas I wanted to get started with a union-coop was forming coops, of women in needlework/arts, to raise funds for NGOs, Relief Workers, who do NOT have huge overhead expenses. I found one,
listing it here: http://www.philadelphia33.org/
I will be coming back to this, with more in depth info, for now, read this, about Why Africa is so poor--by one who Works there doing Relief--what he says about charities may shock you...though they are needed, not all are what they say they are, etc.,
see: http://www.redbubble.com/people/joshuatree1/journal/1534565-why-does-african-countries-not-do-more-to-help-the-poor
The reason I bring this up, it confirms what my first husband said to me, he worked in Africa [and Middle East] for seven years...he often told me of clothes tore up into rags, clothes sent to the people in countries, that gov/corruption would then sell to companies, such as the one my ex worked for, for mechanic rags, etc., or cement for development that was dumped and dumped while people slept outside. They house the animals first, since animals, are their food source-work source. What the man in this relief organization says is very true--
no one who works for them gets paid....therefore, they do need help...I think, that we could come up with some help solutions.
Jane--update, SEE ALSO, and like Wow, this Totally relates to what I was talking about, in post below--i.e. Tina Modotti and photography and Art making a difference, her link is also on the Phil Mission Site,
http://www.livehonestly.com/
Look over the projects the mission team has, I think--that it might be a good idea to do some write ups about why water is poor in countries, why land is not farmable, etc. and why so many barriers,
we have grass roots for political votes, why not grass roots for Mission-Relief work?
